Stations typically support one or two devices per receiver, but Intel says its new wireless series can connect numerous devices into the single, unified station.
Serious video game players can hook up four of the wireless gamepads at once for multiplayer competition, says Peter Adams, product line manager for Intel's connected products division.
"You can even use the gamepad as a wireless mouse to start and move into games from one control or for wireless Web surfing," Adams says.
Intel's wireless base station relies on radio frequency to transmit data between it and the devices and delivers the information via a universal serial bus connection.
"The base station connects to the PC via a USB port, and wirelessly to the accessories using digital spectrum 900-MHz hopping RF," Adams adds. "The devices have a ten-foot range and do not have to be within line of site."
Besides doubling as a mouse, the gamepad device comes with a built-in LCD indicator that shows the unit's player number and mode (game or mouse) and battery strength.
"Under normal use, the three AAA batteries should last up to six months," Adams says.
Tailor Your Wireless Tools
Intel's gamepads also come with the Intel Profile Editor software that lets you assign functions to different buttons for particular games. While most games come with default control settings, Intel includes 50 profiles with each gamepad.
You can also share your profiles with other gamers through Intel's gamepad site, Adams says.
Although somewhat large, Intel's wireless keyboard also has customizable gamer feel. You can configure the four launch buttons to automatically open a favorite application or Web site. The keyboard also has multimedia keys for audio control and a cursor pad rather than four key cursors for more game like movement.
